Last night was a really good night, and I slept well. I woke around 6 this morning - realized it was really 5 because of daylight savings - and went back to sleep. I finally woke up again around 845. Ahhh....sleep.
Before going to bed last night, I looked up what channel was going to televise the NYC marathon, and apparently NBC won the right. As I got up to brush my teeth, D turned on the TV looking for the race for me. Nada. So we went downstairs and looked again. Apparently if you don't actually live in NYC, you don't get to see it televised live. Quite frankly, that seems like sports discrimination to me. They'll show football, baseball, or basketball live, but not a marathon? A football team has what...20 players or something? A marathon has tens of thousands of participants...I imagine more people would tune in than the networks give us credit for. And really...with the billion of channels ESPN has, they can't dedicate ONE to one of the biggest marathons of the year?? And what was their concession??? Highlights broadcasted from 2-4 pm. Really? That's like recording and watching a football game after you already know the final score (sorry, I actually have relatives that do that...always seemed silly to me). The race was won at 1108 am...the networks don't think I KNOW that?!? It sort of takes the fun out of it to see it several hours later. I guess I'll just have to convince D to take me next year to see it live!
Other than feeling cheated by my inability to watch the race in real-time, I had a really good day. My idle hands did exactly what I expected them to do today. They cooked. Oh! Speaking of cooking, D and I got into a debate at dinner last night (M had a friend over and A was at a friend's house, so I imagine M's friend may think we're a wee goofy when our argument started). I mention how much I like to cook, but not bake so much (though I'm getting there). D looked at me like I was stupid and said they were the same thing. I said no...cooking meant real food, and baking was breads and desserts. I said that I liked cooking because I could taste and adjust as I go...which you can't do when baking, so you have no way of knowing you screwed up until it was done. Frankly, I also don't like hanging out to switch cookies around every 10 minutes in the oven. Boring. He then whipped out his phone to confirm he was right and I was wrong. Cooking is defined as the preparation of food by heating...to which baking applies. I then rolled my eyes at him for just not understanding as a man who can't make anything other than boxed mac and cheese, much less understand the intricacies of cooking.
Okay, back to my cooking adventures for the day. I had just started making some Irish steel-cut oatmeal when R came running into the room that she wanted to go to the Broken Egg for breakfast. D comes in 10 seconds later...he'd apparently already mentioned it to her. Honestly, I didn't want to go somewhere for breakfast since oatmeal is all I can really get, and I was already making some. Why have to get dressed to eat what I was going to eat anyway? I encouraged him to go with the kids and have a good time while I stayed home and read cookbooks. So he did, but they ended up opting for iHop instead. So I had about an hour of quiet time this morning to plan my cooking adventures.
After breakfast, I did dishes and got my kitchen nice and clean so I could make it dirty again. My early afternoon consisted of starting a vegan slow cooker meal of tempeh, carrots, potatoes, green beans, onion, garlic, wine, tomatoes, and veggie broth. It's still going and smells great! Can't wait to eat it! I also made brownies and started some fresh garlic bread with Italian seasoning in the bread machine.
After all that was going, I ate my last piece of leftover pizza and then M and I took off for a run around 230 pm. I took a shower, put on my jammies, and got busy looking at cookbooks again since the cooking bug hadn't been squashed yet. It's always fun for me to page through them and find recipes where I have all the ingredients, so I really have no good reason to NOT make them. I selected 3 new ones and got busy. First, I made some chocolate chip cookies (ignore my comments above....I cheated and it was pre-made dough, so no tedium involved), a Caribbean dish of rice, butternut squash, black-eyed peas, onion, garlic, cilantro, and spices, and finally some lasagna. I think I have more desire to cook in me...just no space to put it all. Alas.
D converted a couple books I checked out from the library last week into iTunes today so I could load up my iPod. With 4 books in the queue, there's no way I'll run out anytime soon!
Tomorrow should be a pretty good day. Back to back meetings from 8am on, but that's okay. The second half of the day is one big brainstorm meeting with my boss, so it'll be low-key and informal. Then I'll take M and R to the Y; I'm meeting a friend of mine for a 630 spinning class, and I'd like to find a way to fit in my Fitlinxx workout as well. I imagine I won't have to worry about making dinner. There will be plenty of leftovers :)
